Researchers at the University of Liverpool have developed AI-driven mobile robots capable of conducting chemical synthesis research with remarkable efficiency. In a study published in Nature, the team demonstrated how these robots, using AI to guide decision-making, were able to perform exploratory chemistry tasks at the same level as human researchers, but at a significantly faster pace.
Standing 1.75 meters tall, the robots were designed to address three key challenges in exploratory chemistry: carrying out chemical reactions, analyzing the products, and determining the next steps based on data. The robots worked together to explore three areas of chemical synthesis: structural diversification chemistry, supramolecular host-guest chemistry, and photochemical synthesis.
The research found that the robots, powered by AI, made decisions similar to those of human researchers, but the robots were able to make these decisions in a fraction of the time it would take a human, who might spend hours on the same tasks.
Professor Andrew Cooper, the project leader from the University of Liverpool's Department of Chemistry and Materials Innovation Factory, explained, "Chemical synthesis research is both time-consuming and expensive, and decision-making plays a critical role in accelerating the process. Intelligent robots can help speed up this task."

Traditional chemical automation focuses on physical tasks, like mixing solutions and heating reactions, but decision-making can often be just as time-consuming. In exploratory chemistry, where the outcomes are uncertain, researchers need to make nuanced decisions based on multiple datasets. This is where AI presents a challenge, as determining whether a result is "interesting" or worth further exploration depends on context, such as the novelty of the product or the complexity of the synthetic process.
Dr. Sriram Vijayakrishnan, a former PhD student and postdoctoral researcher at the university, added, "During my PhD, analyzing data often took as long as setting up experiments. As we began automating chemistry, the challenge of data analysis only grew. We addressed this by programming the robots with AI to autonomously process analytical data and make decisions, like whether to proceed with a reaction. The AI processes this information in real-time, allowing the robots to decide within minutes, compared to the hours a human chemist would need."
While the robots currently have limited contextual understanding compared to a trained chemist, their ability to make rapid decisions makes them valuable for these tasks. Professor Cooper highlighted the potential for expanding the AI's contextual knowledge, such as integrating large language models to connect the robots directly to relevant scientific literature, further enhancing their capabilities.
