Understanding Energy in Pokémon TCG Pocket

Pokémon TCG Pocket offers a fresh take on the classic Energy system from the physical Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG). Instead of relying on Energy cards to fuel attacks and abilities, this version of the game streamlines the process by automatically generating Energy for players. This new approach simplifies the gameplay, making it more accessible, but it may also be confusing for beginners. In this guide, we’ll break down how Energy works in Pokémon TCG Pocket and provide helpful tips for managing it effectively.

What is Energy in Pokémon TCG Pocket?

In Pokémon TCG Pocket, Energy acts like action points or mana in other card games. To use a Pokémon’s attacks, or abilities, or to retreat to the bench, you need to attach the necessary amount of Energy to its card. These Energy points are essential for the flow of the game, as they determine whether or not a Pokémon can execute specific actions. The main difference is that Pokémon TCG Pocket doesn’t use Energy cards; instead, the game generates Energy automatically through a mechanic called the "Energy Zone."

The Energy Zone Mechanic

Unlike the physical Pokémon TCG, where you manually attach Energy cards to your Pokémon, the Energy Zone in Pokémon TCG Pocket generates one Energy at the beginning of each round. This Energy is determined by random number generation (RNG) based on the Energy types in your deck. If your deck includes multiple Energy Types, you can’t directly choose which Energy you receive; it will be random unless your deck is dedicated to just one Energy Type.

There are eight Energy Types in Pokémon TCG Pocket, including Grass, Fire, Water, Psychic, Darkness, Lightning, Fighting, and Metal. There is also a special category known as "colorless," which can work with any of the above Energy Types. This system simplifies the game, removing the need for players to manage individual Energy cards while maintaining the strategic depth of Energy management.

How to Manage Energy in Your Deck

To customize the Energy distribution in your deck, go to the ‘Battle’ menu, then tap ‘Decks’ and select ‘My Decks.’ From there, you can choose a deck and customize the Energy assigned to it. Each deck can support up to three different Energy Types, though mixing multiple types can make the Energy you receive in each round unpredictable. To ensure consistency, it’s often recommended to stick to a single Energy Type for your deck, especially for competitive decks in Pokémon TCG Pocket.

An interesting strategy involves adding colorless Pokémon to your deck. These Pokémon don’t require a specific Energy Type to use their abilities or attacks, offering flexibility in your deck building without needing to add multiple Energy Types.

How to Get Extra Energy

In Pokémon TCG Pocket’s Genetic Apex expansion, gaining extra Energy is possible through Supporter cards, like Misty. Misty grants one Water-Type Energy each time you flip a coin and land on heads, continuing to provide Water Energy until you flip tails. While Misty is the only Supporter card currently providing extra Energy, future expansions may introduce other cards that grant additional Energy in similar ways.

For decks that rely on multiple colorless Pokémon, Misty can be particularly useful, even if your deck isn’t Water-focused. The Water Energies she generates can be used on colorless cards, providing additional flexibility.

Special Energy Cards in Pokémon TCG Pocket

Unlike the physical Pokémon TCG, which includes Special Energy cards with added effects (such as double points or free retreats), Pokémon TCG Pocket does not currently support Special Energy cards. The Energy Zone system has replaced the need for these cards, and there are no plans to introduce them as of now. This simplification allows players to focus more on strategic deck-building and Energy management.

Pokémon TCG Pocket Account Management

For players looking to manage their Pokémon TCG Pocket experience, creating and maintaining a Pokémon TCG Pocket account is crucial. An account allows you to track your progress, deck builds, and in-game purchases.
